He went straight to New York, because his brother was already in the states. It was practically the height of the idea for Europeans to immigrate to America for the idea of a better life.

William (Maxwell) probably was not able to find much success with his magic shows in England, but hearing that his brother was doing well in the States, convinced him to immigrate in hopes of also finding success.
